Educated in the Saint Paul, Minnesota public school system,
Brookins acquired a liberal arts B.A. degree from the University of Minnesota in a program that
allowed him to explore many areas including art, history, humanities, media and journalism.
He was a producer/director at the Twin Cities public television
station, KTCA-TV, for seven years. After a stint at graduate school in Michigan, Brookins moved his
family to North Dakota to help establish the smallest non-tax-supported public television station in
the nation.
In 1971 Brookins went to innovative Metropolitan State University, a
college specializing in serving returning adult students from which
he retired in 1998 after serving on the faculty and as a counselor.
He's had a successful career as a free-lance photographer, and
continues to write, produce, direct, and occasionally perform in
local cable television programs. He's an avid sailor and with his
wife Jean has sailed in many locations around the world. In 1989, as
a result of a long-standing desire and classes in mystery writing at
The Loft, Brookins began seriously pursuing writing fiction as a new
career. His first novel, INNER PASSAGES, a story of one man's quest
for justice after the death of his wife while they cruised the coast
of British Columbia in a small sail boat was published by TOP
Publications in 2000. since then, three more mysteries have been
released, the latest, OLD SILVER is about the finding of mysterious
treasure in Lake Superior. He also writes a detective series set in
Minneapolis. THE CASE OF THE GREEDY LAWYERS is an ironic look at the
private eye genre. A second case, THE CASE OF THE DECEIVING DON is
due this year.
Brookins is a member of Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of
America, as well as Private Eye Writers of America, and the
Minnesota Crime Wave, a touring group of mystery authors. The trio
makes frequent appearances at libraries and bookstores, discussing a
variety of topics. He has been a freelance mystery reviewer for the
Saint Paul Pioneer Press and several on-line sites for several
years.
