Michael Connelly, in Milwaukee at Mystery One

Milwaukee can be a funny place in the spring, cold at forty degrees one day, the next, in the seventies. April 23rd we got lucky, it was in the sixties most of the day and sunny. We also had a visit from Michael Connelly. If you have never met Michael, I think the best way to describe him would be to say he's a quiet, observant humble guy. He seems quiet because he does a lot of his talking with his writing, which I think says volumes. When he does talk aloud, its a little quiet, but worth listening to. Mr. Connelly fielded questions about his books and the direction they are going in, the movie made from his novel Blood Work, and the parts of that process he was allowed to be a part of.

There were a lot of people waiting for Michael when he walked up. Standing room only inside, and people waiting outside. And they were happy to wait. Michael took the time to talk to every person with a book, and signed everything put in front of him, including the limited edition CD that was given out with the book. (It's Jazz that Harry Bosch listen to, and was produced by Michael's sister Jane, who also runs his website).

After an hour and a half of straight signing of books it finally cleared out enough that there was time to talk a little more comfortably. We discussed books, and other movie possiblities. (several books are optioned). Michael mentioned his first visit to Mystery One for his book Black Ice, at which a whole four people showed up. Now a few years and a few books later Michael is a bit larger of a draw. And yet, he's still a nice quiet and humble guy. He doesn't really need to tour anymore to sell books. It's nice to see that he still feels loyalty to the fans that love him and the stores that sell his work. As far as I'm concerned Michael Connelly is one of the nicest guys in the business.
