The signing with Edgar Award winning and Anthony award winning author Qiu (pronounced like ZOW!), Xiaolong, Sept 30th, 2002. Qiu was signing his second book, A Loyal Character Dancer, featuring detective Chen Cao.

Qiu is an extremely interesting person for someone from St. Louis. Of course, he's from Shanghai originally. The crowd was a little more academic than usual, but a lot of good questions were asked. He is extremely polite and gracious. He also made people laugh a lot. I would have to say it would be worth your while to go and see this man and buy his books.

And now for something completely different:

I was eager to attend this signing. Qiu's writing is quite different from most of the genre in scope and writing style. At first, he spoke so quietly, he couldn't be heard, but the decibels increased as the crowd warmed up to his lovely humor. He answered many questions about China as a country and as an ever-changing political state. What captured me was the debate on the importance of Ping-Pong as a sport. He challenged the room with no one willing to step up to the counter. His skill was self evident. A charming signing.
