Quinn, a 49-year-old peri-menopausal Spokane police officer and her much younger partner, Odd Gunderson, catch a strange assignment: driving to tribal headquarters on Shalish Island to bring back bail jumper Charles T. Houser, a 30-something loser on the lam with his underage, out-of-control, 14-year-old girlfriend, Stacey. The six and a half hour trip to Shalish Island passes without a hitch, but things start getting interesting when Odd’s attention is grabbed while reading about an unsolved murder that happened on the Indian reservation 30 years previously. Quinn and Odd finds themselves in very unfamiliar territory once it becomes apparent that Odd knows things about the tiny island that he shouldn’t.

Ms. Argula has a very wry sense of humor, and her dry writing style took a bit of getting used to for me. Once into the story a bit, however, the book was quite enjoyable, if a bit slow paced. She handles the touchy subjects of menopause and reincarnation with a sensitive wit. Homicide My Own is a worthy first effort, and I’m looking forward to Ms. Argula’s next novel!
