Well, this was my first John Baker and to be cliched, it won't be my last. I think I'm gonna like the Sam Turner series a whole lot if this book's any indication--never mind future adventures with the protagonist here, Stone Lewis. He's an ex-con with scary-looking tattoos who basically spent his adult life thus far in jail. Recently out, he's more than a little surprised to find an Asian girl, beaten and bruised, on his doorstep. After tending her wounds and letting her come to, the story begins--she's in town all the way from LA to look for her best friend, who hasn't returned letters or calls for some time. Stone, with the help of his aunt Nell, his older associate named Heartbreak, and his mother Sally (who isn't always in a position to help) digs deeper and finds too many connections to Shooter Wilde, his old mentor, would-be-stepfather, and betrayor. Baker shines in showing the connections of love and tension between Stone and his family, and with throwing unexpected surprises about each of the main characters. A neat little gem of a book.
