Colin Bateman writes some weird stuff. Really great stuff, but kind of weird. But I love weird. In this book, his 12th, the story revolves around an author who had some success with his first book, and the rest just kind of take up space on the shelves. It’s a hysterical look at the publishing world and the book buying public.

Ivan Connor has just turned in his latest book only to discover his publisher doesn’t want it. Or him. And no other publishers want it either. It doesn’t matter that it’s a brilliant book, it’s not what’s selling. So he turns to drink, and does something dumb. And his mistake has a multitude of effects on his life. Can a man who just doesn’t care any more succeed? Will his Mother keep making him toast every morning? Why is he hanging out at a women’s prison? Will he end up in prison? Why did he accidentally kidnap someone’s son?

These questions and more are what make this book so much fun. And it really makes me look at the publishing world a little differently.
