Lawrence Block
Class/Genre:   Mystery   [Short Stories]
Berkley Prime Crime, Nov 1999, $21.95, 256 pp.

Short story fans will rejoice with renowned author Lawrence Block’s unique anthology. Noted authors contribute their favorite personal work and another writer’s tale that influenced their works. This leads to a refreshing pairing that is not always obvious. For instance, Stephen King selects Joyce Carl Oates, Ed Gorman chooses Stephen Crane, and Tony Hillerman opts for Joe Gores, etc.

All nine pairs of tales are entertaining and fun to read. They also provide the audience with insight into what motivated some of today’s most popular authors. The concept works fabulously and a part II is already planned for release. Readers will want more than just one more future combination as even the guru of anthologies, Martin Greenberg, will love this collection.
