I had this in the TBR for sooooooooo long it wasn't funny but it's the kind of book that I had to save for the right time, be in the right mood for, I suppose. The mood hit on the train from Toronto to Ottawa as I gulped it in one sitting. Simply put--it's Steve's best yet, by far. So many layers richly textured one on top of another. I loved learning about the Polish community in Edendale and about WWII aircrafts--even if these bits of information were new-to-him when he started writing, by the time they were incorporated into the book, they were seamless and fascinating. And above all, there's Cooper and Fry. Cooper, who is finally asserting some independence in his life, even if he's not sure he's ready for it (yes he is!!!!) and Fry, who is as prickly and standoffish as ever. Yet I realized something after reading BotT--which is that I identify with her a whole lot more than I thought I would. She's trying so hard to assert herself in an environment she's not comfortable or necessarily wanted. She's ambitious and obsessive. She has trouble letting her guard down. I could say more but then I'd be incriminating myself :-) The point being is that wherever she goes on her personal travels, I'm right there with her. Can't wait for the next one, Steve.
