The protaganist of Murphy's Law, Molly Murphy, is someone you'd want to know and to have in your corner if you were ever in a bind. Quick-thinking, funny, fiercely strong and brave Molly presents a fiesty and likeable character. The book follows her from her escape from her kitchen where she killed someone in self defense to her new life in New York City where she tries to investigate a murder. From beginning to end, Molly faces challenges with bravery, humor and compassion.

A second murder occurred while Molly and the other passengers in steerage where held overnight on Ellis Island. This sets up the meeting of Molly and Captain Daniel Sullivan. Sparks fly between them at every encounter, giving the book just the right amount of romantic tension.

Set at the turn of the last century, this historically based novel describes the squalid living conditions new immigrants to America faced as they entered New York City. Bowen also portrayed the class structure both in Europe and in New York and the barriers they presented to Molly.

I look forward to reading more about Molly. This book was a page-turner and hard to put down.
