Series: Molly Murphy # 1

Molly Murphy must flee her home in Ireland. Serendipity connects her with a mother and two children due to sail for the United States. Molly takes the motherıs place and sails to a new country with no prospects and no money. She makes a friend and one enemy on the ship. When her enemy is murdered she becomes a suspect.

Rhys Bowen writes the popular ³Evan² series about a Welch policeman. In this new series about Irish immigrants in 19th century New York she seems to be concentrating on setting up the background story for a new series. The characters are real enough, and Molly is an interesting and spunky, if sometimes foolish, girl. The story, though, seems to show too much fantastical luck in getting her out of many scrapes. The background of Britain, the ships crossing, and early New York are done well.

Rhys writes fairly light mysteries whose best feature is a real sense of place. If you enjoy historical novels you will like Murphyıs Law.
