Billy Dye is an author of horror novels, horror novels that no one has read. He blames his editor and agent, they blame his attitude. To keep money coming in he takes what writing assignments he can. This eventually leads him to meeting and writing about Malcolm Priest. Priest is “the” gangster in Manchester. After a bit of clever editing the article come out and Priest is thrilled, thrilled enough to hire Billy to write his memoirs. But as with everything else in his life, Billy’s mouth and attitude get him in trouble. And being on the wrong side of Malcolm Priest is not a good place to be. Billy’s life takes some pretty wild turns from this point leading to graveyards, reunions with old friends and lots of people trying to kill him.

The book is humorous and fast paced. And while there is violence, it fits the story and situations. I also really enjoyed the references to classic horror stories and authors. It had a kind of new noir feel to it, edgy, funny and a bit unreal and real at the same time. The characters are over the top but well written. This was a very entertaining read and I plan to look for Mr. Bowker’s other work.
