Bubba Mabry returns in Steve Brewer’s “Monkey Man.” A private investigator who knows better than to take himself too seriously.

Someone dressed in an ape costume guns down a potential new client while Bubba is meeting with him in a public restaurant. The “ape” gets away before anyone can stop him (Bubba is still hiding underneath the table). Bubba ends up on the case because the would-be client’s fiancé hires him. They suspected an unusually high number of deaths of animals at the local, Albuquerque, Zoo.

Bubba knows his best chances are to stir things up, and the local police will solve the murder. He also knows not to get in the way of Lt. Steve Romero. What he doesn’t know is how much he will stir things, and he also forgot not to get in the way of Lt. Romero.

“Monkey Man” is extremely entertaining. Bubba’s dry wit and humor balanced with his wife’s common sense approach works very well. The other characters are also very believable, with a very realistic storyline. Pick this one up for several good laughs and a good read.
