Series: Bubba Mabry # 4
Worldwide Mystery, April 2003, 250 pp.

Amber Field, to find her missing husband, biology professor David Field, hires Bubba Mabry, Albuquerque private eye. Mabry hires a helicopter, not his favorite method of travel, to fly him over the dessert in search of Professor Field. Bubba winds up locating Professor Field’s body in the dessert. It is obvious that he has been murdered.

Amber requests that he stay on the case and discover who murdered her husband. Bubba is not your usual suave detective and as his investigations bumbles along he gets in deeper and deeper with the wrong people. His investigation uncovers a land developer in the witness protection program, puts him up against the government and the mafia decides to get a piece of the action.

Bubba’s fiancée Felicia Quattlebaum, a tabloid reporter is busy preparing for the forthcoming wedding that does take place but not at all in the manner you would expect.

I think I would have liked this book much better had I had the opportunity to read the earlier books in this series but I do intend to read the complete series.
