Shaky Ground begins with a young woman, Amber Field, hiring Bubba to search for her missing husband, Biology professor David Field who was last seen heading into the desert for a research trip. Bubba hires a helicopter pilot to fly him around the vast desert in his search. They wind up discovering David Field dead at his research campsite and his notes and camera burned. Amber asks Bubba to remain on the investigation as she doesn’t believe the police will find David’s killer.
Bubba’s investigation leads him to a land developer in the witness protection program whose land David was killed on, Mafia body guards, and someone after a million dollar reward for the death of the land developer by the Mob Boss he ratted out to save his own skin.
Meanwhile, as Bubba begins his investigation he is only weeks away from his upcoming marriage to Felicia Quattlebaum, a tabloid reporter. This is the first marriage for both Bubba and Felicia. He has been living with her for awhile now but has started to get the wedding jitters and figures the investigation will take his mind off of it. Felicia is quite the character herself. When she isn’t throwing herself completely into a story she is investigating, she is dragging home fabric swatches, catalogs, etc. which she forces Bubba to pour over with her for their bridal registry as Felicia believes they should make the most of the wedding gifts.
I really like Bubba. He is a rather bumbling investigator and Felicia tends to make him look like a fool a good bit of the time when he does not do it on his own. He is a very human character that one can identify with. He is scared when faced by the bad guys with guns not your regular Mr. Macho. He is also quite content to live with and marry Felicia knowing full well that she is the major bread winner in the family and also the boss in the household. But at the same time you do not see him as a free loader either.
I look forward to reading other installments in the Bubba Mabry series.
