Steve Brewer is a versatile writer. The first book I read from him was Bank Job, a very funny story with a marvelously fitting ending. This one is different. There's not much funny about holding a company hostage for several million dollars.

Matt Donohue retired from DelaTek feeling some rancor against the head of the company, LaCosta, who married Steve's ex-wife. But now he is expected to get DelaTek out of trouble. His efforts may save his stock value but he will end up beaten and shot . And if LaCosta's enemies don't do him in, there are always the Tyler brothers.

Brewer's story lands you right in San Francisco, and he does a good job on characters. You won't find any slow spots here; even if you figure out the puzzle in advance, the tension never lets up.
