Ken Bruen
Class/Genre:   Mystery
Series: Jack Taylor # 2

Bruen's intriguing protagonist Jack Taylor returns, still struggling with alcoholism and a lack of direction but now with cocaine addiction added to his list of flaws. After a stay in London during which he realized none of his grandiose plans for a comfortable life, Taylor has returned to Galway to continue his life on the lower rungs of respectable society. He is approached by a member of a local clan of gypsies - also dubbed "tinkers" or "travelers" in local slang - to assist in identifying who is responsible for a series of mysterious deaths among their clan.

Taylor's investigations soon identify a possible suspect, but since he stops often to score drugs or drink to excess events don't proceed quickly to an apprehension.

Bruen's novels are darkly atmospheric. This reader likes Jack Taylor and roots for him, almost in spite of the myriad ways in which Taylor is his own worst enemy.

I hope there is another Jack Taylor book in the works!
