Sergeant Amy Callan and Lieutenant Caroline Cook were army career women who suffered sexual harassment and were forced to resign. When they turn up murdered, the FBI start looking for a loner, an army man who knew them both.
Jack Reacher fits this description to a T. Can he convince the FBI that he is not the killer and help them track down the real one?
It has to be said that Lee Child can write some very authentic thrillers and this book is no exception. He uses American slang, sets it authentically in different places across America and generally writes a good thriller. It is even more surprising when you learn that he is not, in fact, an American, but an Englishman who moved to America recently. He has certainly learnt the art of writing an American-style thriller.
With this novel, he has written his most confusing one yet. I had no idea about the identity of the killer and I only guessed the method that was being used late on in the novel, just before it was revealed. He really has packed the novel full of surprises and he even manages to develop his main character even more.
All of Child's thrillers have been very well done and 'The Visitor' is no exception to this. It's interesting to note that in America, this novel was published as 'Running Blind'. Both titles have great significance to the novel, although I feel that 'The Visitor' may well be the better title. When you read the novel, you will find out why.
