Soul Patch is the fourth installment of the Moe Prager Mysteries. Moe is an ex-NYPD cop. He now owns several wine shops in partnership with his brother. He also does some investigating on the side. He is bored with the wine shops but does enjoy the investigations even though the one in this book almost gets him killed.
Red, White and You, the third wine shop opened by Moe and his brother have a grand opening. NYPD Chief of Detectives Larry McDonald attends the opening and slips a tape to Moe. The tape is an illegal tape of an interrogation by two detectives. The young hood who is being interrogated brings up events that happened years ago. Listening to the tape sends Moe on a mental trip back through time.
Shortly after receiving the tape the body of the person being interrogated on that tape by the police was found dead. Next Detective Larry McDonald is found dead. It is agreed that McDonald committed suicide but that is not an acceptable answer for either Moe or Larry’s ex-wife.
Moe begins investigating and winds up in the streets around Coney Island where he first patrolled. He meets some old acquaintances and gains some new ones. He also finds himself in great danger. Moe senses that he is in danger and sends his wife and daughter out of town to safety.
Soul Patch is an interesting and exciting read. I haven’t read the previous three Moe Prager Mysteries but I do intend to remedy that right away.
This book is a stand alone but I think that I would have enjoyed it even more had I read the first three books.
