Michael Connelly
Class/Genre: Mystery Police Procedural
Series: Harry Bosch # 6
Harry Bosch is a scrupulously honest cop. He is impatient with the bureaucratic niceties of the upper echelons of the Los Angeles police department, and exasperated with the public distrust of police procedures in the wake of the OJ Simpson trial. But in part because of his scrupulous honesty, the top brass in the department call him to a special case. An attorney who has made a career of civil rights actions against the LAPD is found shot to death at an LA tourist attraction - the funicular cable system dubbed "Angels Flight" which moves people up and down a sleep slope in downtown LA.
The case looks suspiciously like a revenge murder by a cop - since the dead attorney had won many impressive claims for damages against the department. But as is the case with many of Connelly's novels Bosch gradually discovers that much much more is going on here. Eventually he is working to find a mole deep within the LAPD who sold information to the dead attorney, looking for the secrets behind a pornographic website, attempting in vain to help a fellow cop come to terms with a disastrous lapse of judgement, and bucking the brass who are hoping he will find answers to the murder which will placate a restless populace who are spoiling for a violent fight.
Bosch also copes with deep regret and worry as his marriage collapses, and he fears his wife is giving in to the pull of a ruinous addiction.
As in all the Bosch novels, contemporary LA is an important character.
