Michael Connelly
Class/Genre: Mystery Police Procedural
Series: Harry Bosch # 9
Harry Bosch is no longer a cop. Several months before this book begins, he left the Hollywood station late at night, leaving his service weapon and badge behind on his desk, and within the next few days arranging to receive his pension. But he took copies of old, unsolved cases with him, and the circumstances of one particular case continue to call out to him.
Harry begins to investigate this death - of a young woman strangled in the vestibule of her apartment building, with the murder scene indicating she had been sexually assaulted as well. As with all of Connelly's books, the unfolding story will not go along the path the reader might expect. Harry ends up briefly imprisoned in a lockup for persons suspected of involvement in post 9/11 terrorism, and gets an unsettling look at the worst consequences of the Patriot Act, and Homeland security measures.
But a plot which would involve terrorist issues would be much too easy, and instead Harry begins to follow a twisted plan conceived by a group of extraordinarily greedy, cruel young residents of the LA area. In addition to identifying the killer of the young woman, Harry also solves the mystery of a missing FBI agent, the theft of $2 million in cash, and uncovers long buried corruption in the LAPD station where he spent so much of his career.
Along the way, Connelly returns the salute given to Harry Bosch by Robert Crais in "The Last Detective." Regular readers of his books know that Connelly can be expected to end his books with an unexpected twist. "Lost Light" is no exception - a brand new set of experiences are ahead for Harry. I hope we have another book in the series coming, I want to know how he handles things!
