Series: Harry Bosch # 4

Things are falling apart for Harry Bosch. A major earthquake in the Los Angeles area has damaged his mountain side home. According to building inspectors, the damage is irreparable and Harry must find another place to live until the house can be demolished and new construction begun. Defying the city, Harry sneaks in and out of his house continuing to live there and beginning to make rudimentary repairs.

The LAPD has placed Harry on leave and sent him to a departmental psychologist. It seems Harry took exception to some actions of his supervising officer, and pitched the guy through an office divider.

And a woman he was oh so gradually building a relationship with has left LA, out of patience with his reluctance to be honest with her.

Faced with too much time on his hands, Harry begins to face some unpleasant truths about his childhood, and determines to understand the circumstances of his mother's murder some 20 years earlier. Using the alias of an on duty cop, Harry visits dusty evidence storage lockers, retired cops, the Gulf coast of Florida, the home of a senile old woman living near Las Vegas, elegant mansions in LA, and a reluctant fingerprint technician working for the LAPD. A death by torture of someone unwittingly drawn into Harry's search makes him realize that much more is at stake than just his mother's long ago death.

I like the way Connelly makes LA a major character in the Harry Bosch series. I'm enjoying catching up on early titles in this series, and look forward to the next one!
