Other reviews posted here give summaries of the plot action in this book - I don't need to repeat those comments. What I would like to add are some reactions to the character Connolly has created in Charlie Parker.
He has endured the murder of his wife and daughter, and in the aftermath his sensibilities have been heightened in ways which frighten him at first, and certainly have supernatural characteristics. Nevertheless, as he continues to experience encounters he cannot explain, he becomes more accepting of this heightened awareness, and Connolly is able to portray these scenes in a way the reader can accept as well.
"The Killing Kind" is not a book for squeamish readers, there are many scenes of incredible cruelty and violence. However Parker moves through his days with a strong sense of responsibility to persons affected by violence. He struggles to define where this responsibility will lead him, but as the story unfolds, the reader is sure that Parker is right to pursue the villians where he finds them.
Laced throughout the book, indeed in all of Connolly's books, are passages which I can only describe as lyrical. Some passages are just downright lovely, that's the only way to describe them.
Parker's fourth book will soon be available in the US.
I'm looking forward to it!
