John Connolly
Class/Genre: Mystery Thriller Private Investigator
Series: Charlie Parker # 4
Hodder and Stoughton; March 2002 (UK release)
This is the fourth book by Connolly featuring Charlie Parker. And as usual, it grabbed me right from the beginning. The first chapter sucked me right in. As usual Mr. Connolly has done some homework. In this book it involves history in Charleston South Carolina, and slavery. I picked up some interesting facts and they are presented in such a way that they add to the story beautifully. While reading you can’t help but think the author spent time there, his descriptions of the area are so well done.
In this book Faulkner, from The Killing Kind, is coming up for a bail hearing. Needless to say this leaves Charlie and his friends a little apprehensive, as they are still feeling the affects of their last meeting with him. And at the same time we find that Charlie and Rachel have bought a new house, in anticipation of a new family. While this is going on, Parker is working a cold case, a missing person case with very few leads. As fate would have it this is when an old freind from the New York DA’s office decides to call and ask a favor. A young black man has been arrested in Charleston, and Charlie's old freind, now in private practice in SC, calls to ask for help investigating the charges against his client. There are racist groups involved, and things get out of hand. In typical Parker fashion, our hero digs through the murky waters to the truth. And what he finds is not pretty.
A wonderful read that I would recommend highly.
