Poltergeist The Legacy: Maelstrom
Matthew J. Costello
Class/Genre:   Fantasy
Series: Poltergeist The Legacy
Ace, Feb 2000, $5.99, 258 pp.

The Legacy has existed since time began. The organization consists of valiant soldiers risking their lives to guard the world from the forces of evil. The members volunteer for this dangerous job. In the present, the headquarters is located in Southern California, though the group has worldwide agents serving as informants, helpers, and soldiers. Some even have psychic abilities.

Father Phillip has a vision of a woman informing him that “I am not lost”. Phillip informs The Legacy. They learn that the woman, who worked for an art dealer specializing in Ancient Egypt artifacts, simply vanished off the streets of New York. Rachel travels to the big Apple to see what happened. At the same time, another Legacy member reports about a supernatural experience in the waters near Bermuda. These two seemingly different events are linked through a discredited priest struggling to reach the Legacy Headquarters. If he fails to attain his goal, evil will enjoy a feeding frenzy like none ever seen on Earth before.

Based on the television series of the same name, POLTERGEIST THE LEGACY: MAELSTROM is a well-written tale that lives up to the quality level of its TV counterpart. Matthew Costello provides his audience with fully developed and interesting characters whose interpersonal relationships make this tale more than just another horror novel. Readers who enjoy a creative and entertaining horror story populated with an ensemble who appear real will relish this novel.
