While directed at school age children who are beginning a bird watching career, this lovely book is likely to appeal to any residents of the Western US with an interest in our feathered friends.

Delightful illustrations by Jennifer Dewey enhance every page, and each species is described in detail, with information on migration habits, nesting behavior, coloration, and preferred food. Adding to the charm are short excerpts from Native American legends about many of the birds.

Although written with young adults and children in mind, the tone of the narrative refuses condescension.
