Robert Crais
Class/Genre: Mystery
Series: Elvis Cole # 9
Feb 2002, Doubleday 400 pages/ $ 24.95
Robert Crais returns to his Elvis Cole series in this, his eleventh book. There are some interesting insights into Elvis’s life . There are a few appearances that mystery fans will enjoy. It has the Elvis sense of humor we love, but it is also more serious in the same way LA Requiem was.
The story opens with Elvis watching his girlfriend's son Ben while she is away on business. We see Elvis bonding well with the boy, but this being a mystery, things go bad. Ben goes missing and the frantic search begins. Of course this also means we get to see Joe Pike. Along the way we are given a glimpse in to who Elvis is and how he got to where he is. Including a look at his childhood and some of his time in Viet Nam.
Lucy’s ex-husband Richard comes to town to bring his own special brand of joy as he joins the hunt for his son with some friends he brings along from New Orleans. So between the police, Elvis and his partner Joe, and Richard and his boys you would think they have it wrapped up, right?? Ha Ha!!!!
Mr.Crais has a few surprises up his sleeve. It all makes for a book that demands to be read quickly and absorbed. The end of the book is a whirlpool of events that leads to an exploding conclusion. And the aftermath of events will have a bearing on Elvis in the future. A nonstop book that was a joy to read.
