Bill Fitzhugh
Class/Genre: Mystery
March 2003, William Morrow 480 pages
I love this guy! The great thing about a Bill Fitzhugh book is that you are always assured of a great read and a great time reading. HEART SEIZURE is pure Fitzhugh. An irreverent look at our health care system, our political system and anything else the author can think of.
Our main characters are a heart and a guy who loves his Mom. Spence Tailor is a lawyer still fighting the good fight. It is in balance that brother Boyd is the V.P. of a local bank in L.A.. Their mom needs a heart transplant and she needs it fast. When she finally makes it to the top of the recipients list and is admitted to Cedar -Sinai Spence is grateful. The problem? On the east coast the President has collapsed and guess what? He has Mom’s blood type. Not only are the President’s flunkies now about to steal Mom’s heart the president’s chief foe and opponent in the upcoming election has sent a team to destroy the heart outright. Like any good son Spence steals the heart back and a car chase like none other in mystery fiction ensues. So with a doctor, a cop, and a doped up Mom Spence and Boyd take to the road in an adventure worthy of Thelma and Louise. From Washington to L.A. everyone from the C.I.A. to right-winged radio talkers gets thrown into the plot. And you turn the pages laughing all the way and marveling at the true extent of Fitzhugh’s talent. For he is the only writer out there who has the ability to make up plausibility. That’s right, just when the plot makes no sense he throws something out there that amuses and makes the story move forward no matter how preposterous it is.
I can’t wait for the next book. I hope Fitzhugh is at that keyboard!!
