Kate C. Flora
Class/Genre: Mystery
Series: Thea Kozak # 6
2003, Forge, 335 pages
In Liberty or Death author Kate Flora again puts her heroine Thea Kozak in harms way. The book opens with Thea dressed in White satin and puffy sleeves taking that last private moment before marriage. Long time love Andre Lemieux isn’t going to make the ceremony. He’s been kidnapped by a militia group.
The reader’s ride and Thea’s nightmare truly begin when she decides to pitch in by going undercover in a small Maine town. Waitressing, no less.Who says she wouldn’t do anything for her man.
Author Flora uses the format of her long standing series to address some very interesting questions. What makes different kinds of people join a militia? What makes average and sometimes honorable people in a small town look the other way when they know their fellow citizens are engaged in illegal and amoral behavior? There’s a humanity that rings true in this neatly tied up plot. From Thea’s empathy for a small boy and his father to her struggle dealing with an abhorrent situation over which she has little to no control. In a town where even the most finger to the pulse citizens don’t know whose in control can Thea find enough pieces of the puzzle slinging burgers and fries to help the police get her man back before he’s executed? Will she make it out alive? Read the book and find out.
