Series: Maura Isles and Jane Rizzoli # 5

Vanish is the cross-country tale of 2 Russian girls who wanted to come to America to chase their dreams, instead they found nightmares. Forced into prostitution, they experienced brutal emotional and physical pain. After their escape, one of them briefly ends up on Maura’s exam table. But she isn’t dead. In the hospital she takes several hostages, including a very pregnant homicide detective Jane Rizzoli. After the hostage situation, Maura and Jane are joined by FBI agent/Jane’s husband, Gabriel Dean as they try to unravel exactly what happened. The more they dig, the more corruption they find. But in the end, everything comes back to the girls who had vanished.

Brilliantly written, Ms. Gerritsen hits this contemporary issue of child trafficking and prostitution head on. She takes a dark issue and delves into its ugliness with cunning and literary grace. Also her relationships in this series remain fresh and not forced, growing and realistic. One can continue to look forward to the next one the series!

A must read for those that enjoy something with an edge to it!
