Christopher Golden is a busy guy. He writes comics, screenplays for television and has a number of books under his belt already. This book, The Gathering Dark is part of a series called The Shadow Saga. The wolrd Golden creates in this series is similar to our own. Well, besides the vampires and demons and other supernatural creatures roaming around.

In this installment we find Peter Octavian, a former vampire who is now mortal again trying to adapt to life as a regular person. It would probably be easier if he didn’t have to deal with the burden of being one of the most powerful mages on the planet.

Because of events in previous books, which included the discovery that the catholic church was hiding the knowledge of the supernatural being real, and the destruction of a book of spells they used to keep the supernatural in check, the population at large is aware of the existence of vampires and other creatures.

But it doesn’t explain what is happening to cities and towns all over the world. Place that are disappearing and being replace by dome like structures that keep people out. And the people trapped inside are essentially doomed.

Peter is drawn into this, along with a number of other people who are attuned to this sort of thing. And together they under take what will become an epic battle against dark forces.

I really loved this book and will definitely be on the look out for more of his work. The writing has a seductive style that won’t let you just put the book down. Which is fine by me, because I couldn’t stop reading.
