A homeless man found the woman in a south downtown Chicago alley. He managed to bring her to the nearby Sister Mary Agnes shelter. When the woman awakens she suffers from amnesia, but is terrorized by any mention of going to a hospital.

Three years have passed since former homicide detective Michael Coffey left the force after killing the escaped convict who previously murdered his wife and child. Michael occasionally visited Sister Agnes, who gave him a bit of solace from his demons. However, he never expected to rescue an amnesiac and his favorite nun from an attacker. He takes the woman with him in order to protect the shelter and the amnesiac from her assailants. When she begins to remember a motel room, the duo travels there, only to find a murdered person. Michael still believes that she is innocent and decides to prove he is right, regardless of the cost, which could be his life.

Multiple award winning Ed Gorman is like a physics experiment that works ever time. His latest novel, DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS, is a brilliant thriller that in the hands of a lesser being would have been another trite amnesia novel that readers would want to forget. However, Mr. Gorman provides freshness, action, and angst-laden characters as he continues to be the master of the taut chilling thriller. Another winner by a writer, whose mantle is filled with the gold.
