Bantam, Nov 1999, $23.95, 304 pp.
Sherry Carter and her Aunt Cora Felton, creator of a nationally syndicated puzzle column, leave New York City and move to the peaceful town of Bakerhaven. Sherry is elated to leave the city because her ex-husband Dennis, a mediocre rock musician, physically abuses her when he feels frustrated. The quiet town of Bakerhaven has no major crime until someone murders a local girl in a cemetery. The only potential clue is what appears to be a crossword puzzle clue in the victim’s pocket.
Police chief Dale Harper realizes he is out of his depth since he never handled a homicide before. The district attorney presses for a fast solution that he hopes will include removing the sheriff from office. A second killing occurs to further heat the already boiling political pressure. Dale consults with Cora, praying she can decipher the puzzle clues. Cora begins her own sleuthing that leaves her niece, the sheriff, and a reporter struggling to keep her safe.
A CLUE FOR THE PUZZLE LADY is a fun mystery due to the eccentric behavior of the odd but likable cast. The astute sheriff is a pleasure to observe as he seeks help in solving the cases. Parnell Hall’s breezy writing style leads to a fast-paced tale that immerses readers into the intricacies of the plot. There is a gimmicky puzzle at the beginning of the novel, but answers to the clues are contained in the story line and cleverly blends into the intelligent novel. Renowned author Parnell Hall has created a refreshing who-done-it that will please many of the genre’s fans.
