Don't let the vividly picturesque and restful backdrop and the slower, more tranquil pace of this mystery novel fool you - Death's Golden Whisper is packed with hardcore action and suspense. Deep in the wilds Quebec, Meg Harris has retreated to Three Deer Point, the homestead of her deceased Aunt Agatha in order to find solace and lick her wounds following a painful divorce. Literally out in the middle of nowhere, Meg's only neighbors are the people who live on the Migiskan Reserve. Their way of life is threatened when CanacGold invades the peace and quiet of the region with plans to mine gold from Whispers Island. Eric Odjik, band chief of the Migiskan, enlists Meg's help in trying to stop the gold mine by determining the ownership of Whispers Island.

Meg's detective work uncovers many puzzling and disturbing things about Aunt Aggie, such that Meg isn't sure she ever knew her aunt at all. When members of the Migiskan Band start disappearing under suspicious circumstances and Meg finds herself the victim of a break in, she has to come to grips with the fact that she and her family might hold the key to current events.

R. J. Harris does an excellent job of creating people the reader can care about - Meg Harris and Eric Odjik are strong characters with incredible chemistry; you can almost see the sparks fly. I'll be looking forward to reading more of their escapades in future books in the series!
