Ace Books, 2001, 260 pps.
Sookie Stackhouse of Bon Temps, Louisiana lives with her Grandmother and waits tables at Merlotte’s. Sookie’s parents are dead. She has one brother, Jason. Sookie has literally no social life but Jason is never at a loss for companionship. All of the girls are attracted to Jason.
Although very attractive Sookie keeps to herself because of what she refers to as her “disability”. The disability is actually the ability to read other people’s minds. Sookie feels she has to keep a barrier up at all times to keep from hearing other people’s thoughts.
Sookie’s boss Sam appears to be interested in Sookie but tries to hide his interest. Although Sookie can read some of his thoughts Sam has the ability to shut his thoughts off when Sookie is around.
Then Bill moves to Bon Temps and visits Merlotte’s. Bill is a vampire immediately attracted to Sookie. Sookie is stunned because she can’t read his thoughts. Sookie’s social life suddenly picks up and she begins spending time with Bill. Sam also begins to show more interest.
But life is not to be smooth. First one girl and then another is found murdered and Sookie’s brother Jason is a prime suspect.
Dead Until Dark was fun to read and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. I think Sookie Stackhouse will have some interesting experiences.
