Gretchen Gilman is a successful journalist with an internation reputation. But a letter from a childhood friend draws her back to the small Oklahoma town where she grew up, and plunges her into long forgotten memories of the years when the second world war took the men of the small community away to fight in strange foreign places, leaving the women at home to wait, worry, and find the ability to keep the life of the small town vibrant.

She remembers in precise detail the events of the evening when a woman was found murdered in her home. The body was found by the woman's daughter, Gretchen's best friend. The woman's husband has disappeared and the small community immediately suspects him of the crime, since his jealousy of his wife's lively personality was well known.

This an enjoyable book, on the "medium boiled" side. Her recreation of the small town atmosphere is right on, with well developed characters and personalities. Eventually as Gretchen revisits old friends, retraces old paths, and remembers, the truth of that evening becomes clear.
