Tony Hillerman
Class/Genre: Non-Fiction Mystery Fiction Biography Reference
Tony Hillerman and Ernie Bulow have been friends for more than 20 years - they met when Hillerman's repute as an author was increasing, and Bulow owned a bookstore in Gallup, New Mexico. In 1988, they collaborated on a small self published book, which included a short story by Hillerman, short autobiographical essays by each of them, and an extended interview with Hillerman fielding thoughtful questions from Bulow about the process of writing, Hillerman's long fascination with Southwestern Indian nations, and the incredibly lucky turns of events which led to Hillerman's fame and highly regarded career.
The University of New Mexico press has reissued this delightful little book in a new trade paperback edition. Much of the material about and by Hillerman also appears in his excellent autobiography "Seldom Disappointed." Bulow's autobiographical sketch introduces us to another person fascinated by the open skies, native peoples, and enduring traditions of the Southwest.
The short story included here features Jim Chee in the early days of his career as a policeman for the Navaho nation, and a short delightful appearance by a character who almost certainly morphed into Cowboy Dashee as Hillerman's books progressed.
Recommended for all Hillerman fans.
