Eighty-five years after the human-zor wars ended in violence and controversy, the former enemies, now allies, live peacefully. It would be going too far to say their societies are integrated - the races tend to live side-by-side rather than together, and most humans still have little knowledge or understanding of the zor. The supposedly precognitive dreams of a zor High Lord, said to be insane, are of little interest to humans until two well-armed naval spaceships on an exploratory trip across the Empire's border vanish. Representatives of both races are sent to Cicero, the border naval base nearest to the disappearances.

The danger behind this disappearance nearly overwhelms the humans and zor as soon as the humans become aware of it. A human must retrace the route of the greatest zor hero; no other defence appears possible.

My main complaint about this book is that it ends with a real cliffhanger, and I have to wait for the third book in the series to find out what happens. This novel is somewhat of an improvement over the first one in the series, as it seems more fast-paced and tightly plotted. The background provided in 'The Dark Wing', especially about zor history and beliefs, is helpful but not essential to readers' ability to follow the action in 'The Dark Path'. This is an very entertaining novel, and the concluding book in the trilogy seems likely to be equally entertaining.
