This excellent short story collection would be a welcome addition to the bookshelves of any mystery lover. The selection of suitable contributions which is so essential to the success of an anthology has, in this case, been carried out to perfection.

Many of the authors represented in "The Best British Mysteries" are well-known to North American readers; others may be less familiar, but if their other work is up to the standard of their contributions to this anthology, it is well worth tracking down.

The stories themselves offer a marvellous variety of styles and settings, as might be expected from the contributing authors. Some are modern and hard-edged; others quite cozy and some are historical. Some familiar characters make an appearance as well - both those familiar from other fiction, and those from real life. I am not usually a fan of the kind of semi-historical fiction which is populated with fictional versions of real people, but there is quite a clever example of the type included here.

I highly recommend this anthology - there's something here for every mystery lover.
