St. Martin's, Aug 1998, $22.95, 274 pp.

An amnesiac victim is committed to a nearby hospital after he is found running naked down an English motorway. The cops immediately write the John Doe off as a nut case. The hospital assigns him to Dr. Elizabeth Santer, a psychiatrist who will try to help the man dubbed John West by the staff regain his memory.

With the world peace conference being held in London, the British military take Mr. West seriously, especially when he shows signs of being a trained killer. Elizabeth begins to awaken James memory when he recognizes a picture of a Welsh town. However, James also realizes that he must flee the area. He kidnaps Elizabeth, who still believes in the man that the British militia are hunting for nationwide.

BY ANY OTHER NAME is an exciting romantic intrigue that will please fans of the sub-genre. Though often done before, the story line is fun and well-written by Katherine John. Elizabeth is a top rate character and James will elicit much empathy. In spite of the militia performing like the Keystone Cops, fans of political thrillers as well as those of romantic suspense should give Ms. John's novel a try because they willdefinitely enjoy the tale.
