A curious and evocative debut painted across the Fen's (a rural area of Norfolk on the South East of England), famous for its canals, waterways and rural insularity. Reporter Philip Dryden works for a small local newspaper, haunted by a car crash that put his wife into a coma ('locked-in' state), and bestowed him with a fear of driving. He employs a taxi-cum-chauffeur in this tale of bodies from the past 'resurfacing' and altering the present for those still trapped in the 'doings' of the past. Shady local politics, uneasy alliances and trust - are themes that pepper the hunt for the truth when the past collides with the present. Dryden also discovers the sinister truth of the bodies and why his wife was not saved when his car crashed into the frozen water of the Fen's, and why he was pulled to safety, yet she languishes in a coma. A haunting and moving tale told with none of the serrated edges that most debuts contain. Highly recommended.
