Carson Ryder and his partner, Harry Nautilus are homicide detectives in Mobile, Alabama. They are currently investigating a serial killer, dubbed Mr. Cutter, who is leaving headless male corpses around Mobile. Carson rose quickly from the ranks of street cop to detective by leading investigators to catch the last serial killer operating in Mobile. While trying to solve this crime, Carson must also face ghosts from his past and trouble with superior officers. He also begins a romance with an alcoholic pathologist from the local morgue.

For a first novel, I believe Jack Kerley did a wonderful job and is an author that I hope we will be seeing more of in the future. I would like to see a series to follow the lives of Carson and Harry. They were two very real and likeable detectives. The story was excellent and had me guessing until the end. I did not find this to be your average serial killer book but a book with strong characters that you could definitely identify with.
