Meisha Merlin, May 2001, $16.00, 460 pp.
Sixteen years ago he was a mortal working as a cop for the San Francisco Police department. His life changed forever when he met Lane who forcibly brought him over to the other side. His hatred for the woman who converted him without his choice was so strong that he ended up killing her. Now Garreth, a vampire, works for a small Kansas town police department and has as his partner and lover Maggie Lebekov who has no idea what he really is.
While returning form the hospital, Maggie and Gareth spot a van that the police are looking for and give chase. The van's driver runs them over expecting them to be dead. The driver and his two underage female passengers lick the blood running down Gareth's arm before blithely leaving the scene. Garreth realizes that Maggie is dying and out of his love for her he allows her to expire. He goes after the three killers, who are clever enough to take him on a merry chase.
Fans of P.N. Elrod's vampire novels will want to add BLOOD GAMES to their must reading list. Lee Killough's gift as a storyteller shines through the plot as she keeps the audience wondering what is going happen to next. This police procedural with a supernatural twist is one surprise after another except that readers will enjoy the tale and look forward to the next novel in a strong series.
