Series: Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels # 1

Jack Daniels (short for Jacqueline) is a Chicago cop. She and her partner are assigned to investigate a series of murders - the bodies of young women are found dumped in trash cans, with taunting notes nearby, and a particularly gruesome form of sexual abuse identified on autopsy. The FBI shows up with uniquely unhelpful profiling advice.

In addition to coping with the troubling nature of the crimes, a sleazy private investigator who hinders more than he helps, and an increasing level of personal danger, Jack is making attempts to get her love life back on track and recover from distressing insomnia.

Konrath has a very nice way with conversation - the characters talk like real people talk. The bad guy draws Jack closer and closer to his murderous plans yet the action, while humerous, never goes "over the top" to become cliche.

Jack and her partner Herb are a welcome addition to suspense fiction. I'll be looking forward to another Jack Daniels book!
