This book came out a few years ago, but I found it recently while out scouring the used books stores. I was surprised to see Kotzwinkle’s name in mystery. Well, this book is a perfect example of the PI story.

The protagonist is Jimmy McShane ( a wonderful PI name), and Jimmy is hired to discover who murdered an antiques dealer. The dealer was killed while playing an Egyptian game called The Game Of Thirty. As things progress, Jimmy finds himself in his own game with the killer, who has decided to use New York City as the board.

The book has great characters and I love looking at New York through Jimmy’s eyes. I was able envision the settings in my head and the images stayed with me after reading. It’s a damn shame there hasn’t been more books with this character written by Kotzwinkle.
