Class/Genre: Mystery Woman Main Character
Series: Tess Monaghan # 1
Tess Monaghan has been unemployed since the newspaper she worked for folded. Now she works for six dollars an hour in her aunt's bookshop. So, when her rowing buddy Darryl Paxton offers her $30 an hour to follow his fiancee around for a few days she jumps at the chance. Darryl is worried that his girlfriend is in trouble. Tess, more realistically, thinks Ava is having an affair. When Ava's boss, prominent attorney Michael Abramowitz, is found dead, Tess gets herself even more deeply involved. I very much like Tess as a character - she's witty and intelligent and nicely downplayed. The supporting cast are also very well drawn and interesting - particularly Tess' aunt and fellow bookstore employee Crow. I'm glad to have discovered Tess and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
