Margaret Maron
Class/Genre: Mystery
2003, Mysterious Press, 336 pages
Margaret Maron is a “must read” author for a lot of mystery fans. Her latest book, LAST LESSONS OF SUMMER, is missing her protagonist Deborah Knott. Instead we are introduced to the young woman Amy Steadman. She will be the hero of our tale. We are also introduced to Frances Barbour. Barbour was Amy’s grandmother and has recently been murdered. Was it a robbery or something more sinister?
Amy heads from New York to the family home in South Carolina to close out the estate and she begins to have a lot of questions. There are secrets about to be shaken out of the family tree and Ms. Maron is about to share a bushel of rotten fruit with her reader. LAST LESSONS OF SUMMER is aptly named for it is indeed a book for the “lite” side of the mystery genre. Well written and full of interesting characters the book is drawn much like the “drawing room” mysteries of the past. Full of Christie themes and motivations with a modern twist Maron is ready, willing, and able to take her readers back to a time where mysteries could be read in a hammock with a basket of peaches by the side. So if you’ve a mind to, enjoy before fall descends upon us all.
