This was my first try at Maron's work, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The author uses interesting twists, such as having narrative by the principals intermixed with the story. And this story is good; kidnapping, murder, thievery and other mischief set in a Southern town deeply steeped in its Civil War history and family pride. There's even a ghost.

Newly-wed Judge Deborah Knott and her husband Undersheriff Dwight Bryant rush to Shayville, Virginia when Dwight's son Cal calls and says his mother didn't come home the night before. Twists and turns ensue and Cal disappears. The dog didn't bark so it had to be someone they knew--- but who? The former Mrs. Bryant turns up dead in her car and the trail seems to deadend. The storyline keeps you turning pages and you might as well ignore the dirty dishes until you finish the book.
