Thirteenth in the Deborah Knott series, Deborah is now the wife of Chief Deputy Dwight Bryant of the County Sheriff's Department. A most unpopular J D Rouse was killed on the road one night on his way home by a bullet to the back of his head with what seems like an impossible shot.

In the middle of the investigation, Dwight receives a phone call from his son, Cal, and has to make what is supposed to be a quick trip to a small town in Virginia to see him. When he arrives, he finds that Cal's mother is missing and Cal has been alone for almost two days.

The story covers both mysteries - the search for the marksman and the search in another state for Cal's mother (Dwight's ex-wife). Told from the point of view of both Deborah and Dwight, this is another fine addition to the Judge Knoxx mystery series.
