Ward Hopkins is still reeling from the events of his past. After the death of his parents Ward learns that he has a twin brother who was left on the street when the two were very young. Ward’s CIA friend Bobby assists him in his search for the facts about his birth, his twin brother and why his parents acted as they did. Ward and Bobby connect with John Zandt, a former policeman, and Nina, an FBI agent. John and Nina are searching for John’s daughter who has been kidnapped. It is thought that The Upright Man, a serial killer, has kidnapped Sarah, John’s daughter. Ward comes to believe that The Upright Man is his long lost brother. The four learn of a secret organization called The Straw Men in Marshall’s first book. The Upright Man is a part of this organization.
The second book The Upright Man finds Ward alone and still seeking answers. More strange murders occur and Nina and Ward begin the search again. John Zandt is around but hard to pin down. He seems to be keeping secrets from Nina who has been his lover and Ward who is his friend. Nina and Ward attempt to track The Upright Man as one killing after another takes place. John Zandt keeps disappearing and won’t answer their calls. Then he will reappear where he is not expected with a story that doesn’t always ring true. Bobby appears in this book but only in Ward’s mind.
The Straw Men and the three people’s search for the Upright Man cannot be explained in a review. I would strongly suggest that you read The Straw Men before picking up The Upright Man. I am sure you will enjoy both of these books.
