Michael McGarrity writes an interesting police procedural with an intriguing mix of professionals. Sgt. Clayton Istee, an Apache sheriff¹s deputy, is lead investigator in Lincoln county, New Mexico. Tim Riley, a new transfer from Santa Fe has been killed. Meanwhile his wife Denise in Santa Fe, a three hour drive away, has disappeared.

Clayton must coordinate with the Santa Fe Sheriff Office whose top men seem less than competent while feigning cooperation. The state police are brought in and eventually the Santa Fe police chief Kerney, who also happens to be Istee¹s father. Denise is found dead. What is it about Tim and wife that someone would want them killed?

The story has great family interaction and a few real surprises as the group works together to solve this crime.
